Our Story
A family story from Malabar, that dates back to the 1600s!
Around 400 years ago, ‘Manjali Illam’ was a reputed and well-established family in Northern Malabar. In the ebb and flow of time, and due to the consequent shifts in the political dynamics and social conditions, the family got dispersed to other parts of Kerala. The origins of the family name is attributed to the trade in which they were engaged. The traders of ‘Majal,’ which means turmeric came to be known by the family name ‘Manjali.’ A group travelled southwards, with the aim of possessing land and establishing their family settlements there. With this migration, ‘Manjali Illam’ branched out and established the family roots in Njarakkal and Thrissur. Many of these settlers engaged in trade and commerce in their new home towns.
As generations went by, ‘Manjali Illam’ evolved in diverse ways and this long-established menage became an umbrella that nurtured the birth of new family establishments within the kinsfolk. Some of these establishments were distinctly identified with new names. ‘Vadakkepeedika’ was one of these offshoots that prospered and emerged as a prominent family in the village called Aloor in Mukundapuram Thalook. Around 115 families belonging to ‘Vadakkepeedika’ continues to live in Aloor and its neighbouring regions. It is believed that their ancestors migrated to Aloor around two centuries ago and as per historical evidence, the migration was from various regions belonging the Archdiocese of Verapoly.
